TI designed to house the stage set of a kid sized community. The challenge was to create a hands-on learning facility for students to actively participate and learn how to function in their own city. Fourteen miniature shops were designed each with it's own identity. A variety of building materials were used to accomplish this task. Each store front is as individual as the business it represents. Realism was the key to every aspect of the project. City Hall representing the most important building is located at the axis of the central park setting. It will provide city services and jobs that will include the Mayor, judge, city manager/bookkeeper, lawyer, police officers and environmental control agent. The Bank, a Post Office, the Newspaper, a Broadcast Station, Retail shops which include a Sports Shop, International Shop, Nature Shop and Sign Shop. The Cafe, a Distribution Center, the Multi-Purpose Center, a Wellness Center and the Technology Center complete the rest of the small town.
Utilization of real objects such as street signs, mailboxes, ATM machines, a boat and different light fixtures were all used to keep the "realism concept" at the forefront. Choosing the variety of materials such as different thickness of carpet to distinguish the walk ways from the shaggy green grassy areas, the colorful awnings were added to give the front of some stores the small town look and the tack boards were chosen because they are the sound absorption panels used in the walls of each building.
The tile used in the center of the park like setting represents water and a pedestrian bridge was installed to connect the two streets together.

The use of this property also provides a buffer between the neighborhoods to the north and the future freeway to the south. The Land Use Plan designates this area as Community Commercial which is defined as large, retail centers located along arterial corridors and activity nodes, serving a market radius of 2 to 4 miles. The major retailer of Pecos Plaza will be Kmart Corporation. This proposed store will raise the bar for Kmart and other major discount retail stores around the country. Site master planning included integration with existings buildings on site, demolition of two existing structures, relocation and rerouting of existing utilities.
